THE HOMEMAKER SERIES: FOOD

Food is big in this house. We love our food, all three of us. What we're going to eat is a hot topic everyday, especially at weekends, and if there's ever any spare money at the end of the month you can guarantee it'll be spent on an extra delicious ingredient (normally it's steak). Special occasions are largely centered around food, holidays and day trips are planned on where's good to eat and trying the local cuisine, visits to the deli are always pretty awesome and we get very excited when it's finally dinner time.

And when it comes to choosing what food we'll be eating for dinner, Josephine and I are very lucky to have The Boy and all his wonderful culinary knowledge and skill. As well as being taught and influenced by his Mum in the kitchen from a young age, Ben studied food at A-Level and for his degree and worked in the industry when he graduated - until he decided that actually his love was for cooking at home, for his family and not to the strict rules and regulations of the dessert world. (Oh yeah, he worked developing dessert recipes. I ate a lot, a lot, of chocolate torte. Good times.)

Because of his superior talent in the kitchen, from the day we moved in together at uni Ben has been the cook. And while that meant awesome food for years, it has left my culinary skills virtually non-existent. So I'll admit that, while Ben was giddy with excitement about all the wonderful things he was going to make his baby girl when she started eating solids, I was pretty nervous. Because, as the one staying at home with Phiney, it was going to be down to me to make a lot of the food she ate. I was going to have to learn the basics, and fast.

Our love of food means that we have always been pretty particular about how we were going to feed our children when they arrived. We loved the idea of baby-led weaning and avoiding purees and pulps in favour of finger foods and baby-friendly versions of the food we eat. Josephine took to this like a fish to water. She loved strong flavours and unusual textures from the word go, and is always a pleasure to feed. Breakfast is normally porridge with a range of fresh fruit mixed in; lunch comprises of finger foods (including toast and sandwiches with various toppings and innards plus piles of cheese, fruit, yogurt and raw veggies) and most of her evening meals are portions saved from what we ate the night before. Sometimes however, that just doesn't work out. Maybe we're having something unsuitable (like pizza), it could have been just too spicy or salty or maybe we were just too greedy to save any (ha!) Sometimes I have to make her dinner.
Thankfully it turns out that all those years of watching Ben cook, and the hours watching cooking shows with him, taught me something and subconsciously I have actually picked up a tip or two. Now I'm proud to say that I've come up with two really yummy dishes (for Phiney and us) using what little knowledge I've gathered along the way. They're quick (taking only the time it takes to cook the pasta), easy and most importantly they use ingredients that we always have in the cupboards so there's no excuse for ready meals or boring alternatives, and there's no need to spend any money.

Tomato and Basil Spaghetti
This is one of Josephine's absolute favourites. She gobbles it down every time.
^ Get a pan of water boiling and add as much spaghetti or linguine as you need.
^ Chop up a few cherry tomatoes (as big or small as you wish) and a big bunch of basil while you're waiting for the pasta to cook.
^ Drain the pasta and put back in the pan over a very low heat.
^ Add a good pouring of olive oil to the pasta, as well as the chopped tomatoes and basil.
^ Stir and allow to simmer for a couple of minutes to soften the tomatoes, then serve.

To make it extra special, or if you have them lying around, why not add a little chilli or garlic (gently fry in some olive oil before adding to the pasta to ensure they're not raw) or a few pieces of cooked chicken. And remember, as we don't put salt in baby's food, herbs and spices are even more important to add seasoning and an extra depth of flavour. Basil is just the firm favourite in our family.

Cheese, Ham and Pea Twists
Ben loves this one too and has enjoyed more than one bowl for lunch or a light supper - I'm not so much of a fan (it's too cheesy for this cheese-hater!)
^ Get your water boiling and add as many pasta twists as you need. You can use any pasta of course, but I find that the cheesy sauce does stick nicely in all the crevices of the twists :)
^ While your pasta's cooking, grate a mound of cheese (we use Mature Cheddar, with quantities based on how many people and how cheesy you like it) and chop up some good ham.
^ When the pasta is almost finished, throw some frozen peas in a steamer for a minute or so.
^ Drain the pasta and return to the pan over a very low heat, before pouring in the cheese, ham and peas and adding a little milk. I add a tiny bit at a time to ensure the sauce isn't too runny. Grind in a little pepper, mix it all together and serve.

Again, there are so many other ingredients you can add to the basic cheese pasta. Broccoli, sweetcorn and leeks are yummy alternatives (or additions) to peas.

Strawberry Jelly with Blueberries
Finally, this quick and easy pudding is yummy, sugar-free and packed with fruit. We often end up buying reduced punnets of fruit and freezing it for use in a variety of puddings including crumble, jelly or just sprinkled over ice cream (grapes are the best for this - so delicious). It's a great way to save money on what can be expensive ingredients, then using them when they're needed.

^ Divide quartered frozen blueberries (strawberries, blackberries or grapes - whatever you fancy) across your jelly pots. We use silicone cupcake cases as they're ideally Phiney-sized and a sachet of jelly divides across the 12 of them perfectly.
^ Make up your sugar-free jelly mix and pour over the fruit.
^ Place in the fridge. The hot mix defrosts the fruit by the time it's set.

TIP: To ensure your fruit doesn't clump together in one frozen ball of mess, space the fruit out on a baking tray and put in the freezer for a few hours. Once frozen, you can put them in a sandwich bag or container and back in the freezer; the fruit will stay in individual pieces allowing you to use it as and when you need to.

If you're a super-duper cook, these little recipes and tips probably aren't too impressive - but to me they mark a definite milestone in my cooking education. When Ben eats them, he thinks they're delicious and he praises me for my good mix of flavours, which really means the world to me. I love being able to make good, yummy food for my family and it's given me the confidence to keep trying new things and continue learning.

I'd love to know what your quick and easy go-to recipes are, and to maybe give them a go :)

INSTAGRAM THEMES, PART TWO: highchair antics

I am so lucky to spend my days with this little bird. She's the coolest girl, and I love her.

Josephine's first real meal this lunchtime - left overs from our dinner last night (minus the pork) with mashed new potatoes then her first slice of apple for pudding. She loved it all, as you can tell. But boy oh boy this baby led weaning malarky is a messy business. The high chair is on order. Time for some more civil eating at the table me thinks.

Apart from lots of fun with food, is been a quiet old week round these parts, with matching Mama and daughter tooth ache. Phiney's tooth is coming through more everyday and is quite the weapon when she shoves your fingers into her mouth to chew on (ouch!), while mine resulted in a trip to the dentist and the discovery of an infection in one of my wisdom teeth.

Still, the antibiotics have kicked in and Josephine is coping admirably with the pain - although the total disregard for anything resembling a daytime nap is making any kind of housework or blogging nye on impossible. I'm following Em's lead on the housework front though - nothing is nicer for those with toothache than cuddling on the sofa and I'm more than happy to choose snuggles over dusting.

So, the news I'm sure you've all been waiting for, the winners of our giveaways. Drumroll please...

The winner of the Happy Circus giveaway is Lou from Little Green Shed

Having Ben home for a week was complete bliss. All three of us enjoyed every second of fun, games and lounging about with each other. Sure, the constant downpour of rain and the freezing temperatures (one day it was the same as it had been on Christmas Day apparently) put a stop to the picnics, gardening and walks along the canal we'd planned, but the snuggles on the sofa and lazing in bed more than made up for it.

Plus it was a week of firsts for Phiney. Knowing what a wiggle bum this little one is, we knew she'd love her bouncer as soon as her legs were long enough to touch the floor. And, boy, did she. To begin with she looked a little unsure, but as soon as the music started the girl began to dance and show us her moves. It was brilliant and she's been bouncing in it every day since. Only moving and bouncing when music is played. When Papa's around it's old skool hip hop. When Mama's in charge it's Rhianna and Whitney Houston. If you didn't know before, Ben is way way cooler than me. But in my books, you can't beat a bit of cheese when it comes to shaking your booty and having a dance.
Next up was some food. Food? This girl is growing so fast I can't believe we're already here. She's five months next week. Insane. Anyway, we always thought we'd like to try baby led weaning and over the last few weeks it has become more apparent with every mouthful we ate, that Josephine was getting very interested in food.

There hasn't been any meals yet, and we don't plan on starting those for a good few weeks, but there's been plenty of experimenting. Baby led weaning is all about our little ones learning about food. The tastes, the textures and smells. It's about giving them some food and leaving them to explore. Because we're not particularly organised we haven't bought Phiney a highchair yet, but her borrowed Bumbo complete with tray served us perfectly well.

Day one: A tree of soft broccoli, some skinless cucumber, a piece of avocado and a chunk of strawberry. The cucumber was apparently too boring for words and after a quick sniff was returned to the tray. The broccoli's strange texture occupied her for a while and she was licking it like a lolly pop with a quizzical look on her face. The avocado and strawberry? Unsurprisingly those got munched. Not entirely, but she certainly had a nibble.

Day two: Ben decided to try more interesting mixtures of flavours. On the menu (all homemade of course - Ben's been so excited about getting to this stage and making her first meals) was Tzatziki, houmous, a broad bean, pea and mint paste and a tomato (skinless and seedless), basil and onion concoction. We dolloped some on her tray and she went nuts. Scooping and licking the food off her tray like a cat, and "mmm"-ing all the way. She loved every. single. mouthful. What a joy to behold. But then, with us as her parents, the girl had to love her food. Ben and I revelled in this beautiful sight. Our first lunch together, snacking on the same pulses but with a couple of pitta breads thrown in for those of us with teeth. Since then there's been some yogurt and sweet potato mash too, all gobbled up with delight.
Yesterday Ben went back to work and his girls missed him so. We're not whole without him here. But when he walked through the front door last night, Phiney's face lit up and the biggest smile flew across her face. Papa was back, and our house became a home again.

Despite a last minute re-location to our front room, our Jubilee picnic (which was originally meant to take place in the park along with thousands of others but was eventually rained off) was a huge hit. My Mum did a seriously stellar job with the homemade treats including sausage rolls, potato salad, cheese and bacon twists, impressive cupcakes, iced orange and ginger biscuits, scones and clotted cream and, of course, Coronation Chicken.

While we're not particularly bothered about the royals, it was most definitely worth celebrating the jubilee if just for the food. I'm seriously full up now, but the fridge is packed with leftovers that are calling me.

Josephine enjoyed the festivities, especially her homemade crown courtesy of her cousins and Auntie Chloe. She even got in on some flag waving action. Until she tried to eat it, at least.

It's crazy to think that when we were celebrating another royal event last year Josephine was just a tiny speck in my belly; we didn't even know she was there. And this year she was sat with us, laughing away and filling our lives with joy. What a difference a year makes.

Oh, and happy Diamond Queenie.

ps. tune in on Friday for some lovely treats for you, my lovely readers. It'll be my 250th post and I have a couple of giveaways and awesome offers lined up for you all xx

This started off as a post about boobs. More specifically my huge, huge pregnancy boobs and how yesterday I had to do a spot of bikini top shopping before we head off on holiday. When I was about 8 weeks pregnant I had to buy a couple of bigger bras and then about 2 weeks ago, I had to buy even bigger bras. I’ve always been what some may say is blessed in that department but this is getting ridiculous. A 32 DD on someone who is as vertically challenged as me (5ft 1” ish), well it’s surprising I can stay standing upright.

So that was going to be it. But I wanted to add something else too. A couple of posts ago I wrote about how it wasn’t bothering me at all that my new PJ bottoms were a size bigger to make room for the growing belly. Well it didn’t. Until B took some bump photos of me on Sunday and I got all bummed out about how, now the smallest thing about me (my waist) is disappearing, my short rather dumpy legs appear even dumpier. And I know they’re not, because I’ve actually put on very little weight and all my trousers are still fitting perfectly – well, apart from that top button. But bummed out I still got. In fact, I admit that the picture I posted was carefully chosen as it was the only one that hid said dumpy legs from you all.

It annoys me that this got me so down. After all, B thinks I’m even more awesome than before (his words, not mine) and that actually I’m hotter than ever (again, his words). That he’s loving the boobs as much as the belly. Unsurprisingly. Next time I’ll try to be brave and post those dumpy legs with pride.

Reading all your lovely comments on the Bump Day pictures has certainly cheered me up and now I’m feeling decidedly non-bummed out and on a bit of a high actually. So thank you lovely readers, and a big hello to all those now visiting by way of Em’s blog x

Pictures of some ice creams being devoured. Because ultimately you only get dumpy legs one way. And with our holiday next week and such yummy things to look forward to, I have to say...sod getting down about it and bring on the tasty Cornish treats.

I’m back. Back to work, back to blogging and trying to get back into a bit of a routine after ten days of 2am bedtimes, lie-ins until 11am and trips a-plenty visiting family and friends.

It was such an awesome Christmas break, starting with the arrival of my new camera. I love this camera. Love. It was such a manic Christmas I hardly got any time to figure out the settings, but even on auto it takes some wicked pictures.

Christmas Day involved some amazing presents and the yummiest of dinners, which B cooked using the vintage Le-Creuset pans and this heavy 1970s pot I found him for Christmas. There were 9 of us for lunch and more food than you can imagine.

B gave me these awesome yellow Converse and this fab necklace from one of my favourite Etsy sellers

The two little love birds my sister drew for me

My second pair of brogues. These are from my brilliant Mum.

In the afternoon we visited the rest of my family and spent a few hours being silly, playing board games and eating chocolates at my Grandparent’s house.

We also caught up with some teeny folk. And I worked out how to use the monochrome setting on my camera.

So, here’s to the New Year. I wonder what it’ll bring…
