Has anyone else noticed the number of posts appearing in the blogosphere featuring inspiring sayings or mottos over the last week or so? Maybe it’s got something to do with the New Year fast approaching, and dreams and resolutions for 2011 being formed.

I’m normally not good at sticking to resolutions. For as long as I can remember I’ve had one and only one. Stop biting my nails. Well this year I did it. Full on stopped. I think the thought of gnawed nails at my wedding was the driving force. Not really a good bridal look. They’re not crazy long or anything, but there’s white at the ends. This is new for me.

Around April time I formed another resolution (yeah OK it was a bit late, but it’s the thought that counts). I decided that I needed to make more of a concerted effort to keep in touch with people. We have friends all over the place and sometimes the weeks of not speaking or emailing turn into months and before you know it it’s been a few years since you last saw each other. My hen weekend and our wedding meant we saw all our favourite people lots, which was the most awesome thing, so ever since I’ve been trying to keep up with keeping in touch. Even the odd text message is better than nothing, right? But the last couple of months have been and gone with not much writing at all. It appears my fingers have been too busy knitting and blogging. This has to change and I vow to write one catch-up letter/email a week. This is my pre-New Year resolution.

My Grandma is the queen of snail mail and has drawers stocked with writing sets and notelets, ready to send out. Just like this one. They are always pretty and say beautiful things. I have stacks of notes from her that I cherish and I plan to follow her lead.

  1. i think that's a great resolution.
nothing beats receiving something in the mail and i love the idea of making someone's day with an unexpected letter in the mail :)

and of course, email and texts are always great, it's always nice to know someone is thinking of you.

  2. I love receiving letters but I sadly totally lack to motivation to do it myself. I love this resolution ... How happy are your friends going to be when they get these little surprises in the letterboxes!!

  4. I've dedicated a small part of my week to writing real letters to people who are dear to me, and it's done so much for our relationships! I'm so glad I manage to find the time somewhere!

  5. You're so right, I'm pretty bad at sending regular emails to my friends even though I think about them quite often... We're all busy bees but I should follow your lead and make it a pre-new year resolution too ha ha

By the way, congrats on stopping biting your nails, I've been there and it's SO hard... well done :)

  6. Good on you for not biting your nails. I still bite mine. Not always a good look at age 33! As for letter writing, there is nothing like receiving an old school envelope in the mail. I still write certain people hand written letters, so lovely to send and receive. x

  10. I have had the biting fingernails one for years! Guess what? I still bite. In 2011 I'm going to make a really serious attempt to stop. It is gross habit!

  12. It is lovely keeping up with friends. I usually find though that I am the one that makes all the effort to stay in touch which does get me down but I don't let that stop me. I hope you can keep that resolution forever

That is something I, too, am horrible at. Maybe we should resolve this together!

  15. Congrats on stopping the nail-biting habit, I know how hard it can be as I was really horrible with it until high school.

Do you have Facebook? I know some people think it's horrible but I find it to be a great way to keep in touch with family and friends! My in-laws don't have it and it's definitely hard to write to them every month though!

  16. I suck at resolutions and don't stick to them much, so try to set small milestones for myself. I need success!! hehe

I love that you've vowed to write one catch-up letter or email a week. My mom sends me little packages now and again and it reminds me of how much those things really mean.

    xoxo,

  18. Yes receiving mail in the post is extra special. I have loads of letters in a shoe box from my family when I first left home and went to uni. Now of course, email has taken over and they get shuffled around in cyber folders, or ... deleted permanently. Perhaps my resolution should be to print out important emails to save. Sadly, people don't write emails as they would a letter though. Oh dear, what's to become of us? Kellie xx

  21. I like you resolution. I've also got friends all over the world and as the years have gone by I have gotten worse at staying in touch when really, it doesn't take much to write a quick email or letter. And well done for the nail bitting. I bite my lips (odd, I know) and have never been able to stop despite endless tries.
