ROW THE BOAT: songs to move to

I could write a whole post on how important music is in this house, but I'll save that for another time. Because today I want to talk about the songs you sing to your kiddos. I need some inspiration.

Right now Josephine's favourite tune is Row, Row, Row the Boat. I must sing it thirty times a day. And over the weekend Phiney began to sing it back to me. It's amazing to hear and so cute to see her rocking with her doll Jenny or one of her teddies.

It's all about songs with actions for Josephine. The Wheels on the Bus, Head Shoulders Knees and Toes, Incy Wincy Spider are all sung round here, but we're getting a little bored of these old favourites. So, I'd love to hear the tunes being rocked in your house. And I'm sure Phiney would appreciate it too. I'm not sure she's too keen on listening to me make up new verses anymore...

ps. apologies for my singing!
pps. now I've worked out how to use Vimeo, go check out this adorable video of Josephine saying 'hello' if you haven't already. I know a lot of you had trouble viewing it when I uploaded it using Blogger :)

  4. 'If you're happy and you know it...' is always a hit in our house, as is 'Galumph went the little green frog' and 'Little Peter Rabbit had a fly upon his nose' - all thanks to the local library's bounce and rhyme session!
That video is so sweet (and your singing's not bad at all!)x

  5. Like Helen above, we love Galumph frog in this household (especially the *clap* la-di-da-di-da).

Miss Polly had a Dolly is getting a workout at the moment, except for some reason I can never remember the line that ends with pill-pill-pill.

  6. We love Row, row, row your boat in this house, too! Everly has a book of nursery rhymes and she will run to get it yelling 'Row! Row!' and find the exact page. We also love Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (we sing this at bed-time every night), Baa Baa Black Sheep, Little Miss Muffet and Ring a Ring o' Roses. I do a lot of hand/finger rhymes with Everly as she is fascinated by it and tries to copy - a popular one is the church and the steeple. Her very favourite at the moment is this one (I found a link so I didn't have to type it all out! http://rhymesandmore.blogspot.com.au/2009/03/slowly-slowly.html) - the 'slowly' part you wriggle your index finger up their arm, and the 'quickly' part you run your hands all over their body in a light tickle. x

  7. Hi Nell. I just went on holiday with a couple of little ones and their parents (18 months and 22 months). I sing lots of trad. Folk songs and I tried them out on the babas when they were tetchy or bored. Both kept asking for 'more songs' so it seemed a good idea. My mum used to sing like this to me when I was little too. Dont know where you are on this type of music but some suggestions could be: 'three gypsies', 'fare thee well, lovely Nancy', 'grey funnel line', anything by Sam Lee - you can google all of these. Lots of words to learn but there's a lovely narrative to all of the above. This might be completely off beam, mind! Xx lucy

  9. well done for being brave enough for singing, then recording it, then putting it on the internet!
(and it sounds good!) and she's just so cute doing the actions!

Row row the boat is one of Theo's favourites too. He asks for it "row-row" now and will sing it with me, and loves to SNAP and ROAR! When we were weaning him off night feeds it was the only song that would settle him at night too, so it has a special place in my heart!

But his firm favourite at the moment is sleeping bunnies. Much to do with the fact he has to pretend he's asleep for half of it (he's obsessed with playing a game called nun-nights, which is pretending to go to sleep) and the other half involves jumping around. It's a win win scenario where Theo's concerned!

I'm a terrible singer, so I feel a bit bad for Theo to have to be subjected to it, but I do love the singing with him, and hearing then starting to sing is the sweetest thing! x

  11. Nell, this is too sweet! Sage adores "row, row" and we sing it on a daily basis also. Another verse that we sing is "row, row, row your boat, gently up the river. If you see a polar bear, don't forget to shiver". xx
