A few weeks ago I briefly mentioned B’s sciatica and what a bitch it is. He hurt his back a couple of years ago playing football and it’s basically been screwed ever since. It’s a horrible thing. He past his driving test about two weeks before he hurt himself and has driven once since because his legs go numb and it’s just plain unsafe. Car journeys properly suck for him and he feels bad that I’m the one driving long distances. That he can’t help me out. That really doesn’t bother me, but seeing him in so much pain really does.

Maybe it’s the killer 6 hour car journey three weeks ago that has re-aggravated it or maybe it’s the colder weather affecting his bones, but the last few days have been pretty hellish for him. Days are spent walking around his office trying to stretch out his lower back, evenings doing crazy yoga style moves on one of those massive gym balls and nights twisting and turning to get comfortable. He’s a pretty tired husband right now. And I feel so bad for him.

He had a course of electroacupuncture which was awesome and really helped the pain for a long time. Plus it didn’t involve lots of medication which is something we were both pleased about. We’re not big pill-poppers in our house. Now the pain’s back we’re waiting for B’s free private healthcare to kick in mid-December so he can get another course. B thinks a new mattress might be needed too. And we’re going to talk to a chiropractor too who might be able to help realigning his spine. The doctor’s even talked about some pretty scary surgery as an option. We both agree...no way Hosè.

Hopefully B will get a better night’s sleep tonight. But if anyone can recommend a natural remedy that might be helpful, that would be a wonderfully lovely. I just want him to feel better.

ps. what picture do you include when you write a post of back pain? B suggested his back, but then messed around while finishing cooking dinner hence this beautiful picture. Dinner was one of our favourites though. Garlic chilli pasta & bread courtesy of Bill Granger. I'll post the recipe soon.

  1. Nell - I feel so bad for B. Sciatica sucks, it hurts SO bad. I got a little taste of it when I was 8 months pregnant (apparently baby was sitting right on my scatic nerve) and it was pretty painful. I don't have a miracle solution for it unfortunately, what helped me back then was to sit on a big fitness ball until I felt better and yoga stretches. I really hope B. feels better soon, hang in there xx

  2. Oh sorry to hear B has a bad back, that is awful. I wonder if any form of massage would help or hinder? Wheat bags are also really helpful with sore backs, temporary relief but better than nothing. Your dinner looks yum by the way! x

  3. Poor B, that sounds down right terrible to put up with. I was going to suggets the same as Jgee, wheatbags always work wonders for any pain I have. Chamomile tea might also be helpful to relax him. Good luck!
At least your dinner was lovely!

  4. Oh I'm so sorry for B! Sciatica is so horrible. I couldn't imagine having it for any extended period of time.

Can't wait for that recipe. It looks amazing! :)

  5. Yum! Dinner looks lovely. At least you are eating right. I can't believe B has to wait until mid-December to get his treatment! It sounds like a terrible condition. How about acupuncture? And the acupuncturist might be able to recommend something for sleep. It worked wonders on my mom and my co-worker, the acupuncture also includes a massage in Japan and it's all covered by national health insurance here. Don't know about the UK?

  7. It seems that lately Ive been hearing of many people with back pain and possible back surgery. My dad included. He doesn't know what else to do and they are thinking of giving him needles in the back and if that doesnt work may be surgery. Scary thing isnt it. The back really controls everything. I hope B feels better and that December comes quick for you. Pasta looks great! :)

  9. oh poor B! I can only imagine how much pain he must be in and how that must be so difficult for you as well. My mom had emergency spinal surgery 2 years ago and still suffers numbness and loss of feeling every now and then but is up and active now. i know sitting was one of the worst things for her. I will ask her what the doctors suggested and send you an email. i know that swimming or hyrodtherapy is supposed to be good for core/back injuries...hugs to you both.x

  10. I wish I had some magic potion to share with you. I have had only itty bitty back pain now and then and I know how much that hurts. His must be just awful. Hope you find some help soon. That dinner sure looks like it would help though.
